Wireless car chargers: what to check before buying

Modern vehicle cockpit and technology

A wireless charging mount combines two jobs: holding your phone securely and supplying power. Both need to work well in your specific car.

Phone compatibility

Confirm that your phone supports the charging standard used by the charger. Magnetic alignment features can also depend on the phone or case.

Charging power

A “15W” charger does not guarantee every phone will receive 15W. Actual power depends on the phone, charging protocol, adapter, cable and temperature.

Mounting position

Air-vent, dashboard and windscreen mounts each have trade-offs. Make sure the position does not obstruct your view or interfere with vehicle controls.

Heat matters

Wireless charging creates heat. Avoid leaving a phone charging in intense direct sunlight, and stop using equipment that becomes abnormally hot or damaged.

Check the power source

The charger may require a suitable USB adapter or 12V socket adapter. Verify connector type and required output before ordering.
